Florida virtual School gets national praise
December 10, 2008

Tallahassee Democrat

The Florida Virtual School received national recognition Tuesday from the Center for Digital Education for its role in providing more than 530,000 courses in the past 11 years and setting the pace for other states when it comes to online learning.

The fully accredited school offers more than 90 classes, including advanced courses, that are taken by a variety of students, such as those who are home-schooled and those in need of credits in order to graduate. It's been especially useful, particularly in the past, if schools didn't have advanced placement or honors classes, supporters say.

"It's incredible how fast teaching has evolved since I was teaching," said Florida's Education Commissioner Eric Smith.

Julie Young, president of the Florida Virtual School, said the Legislature has supported the school and that has contributed to its success.

"We are privileged," Young said. "And we thank everyone who has worked with us."

Gov. Charlie Crist was especially proud of the recognition.

"As school leaders are asked to do more with less," Crist said, "I am encouraged to know our online learning policies are moving schools in the right direction to ensure students gain the skills and knowledge needed for life-long success."
